News
Great job on Finals, everyone! I was really impressed with the amount of preparation for this playing test and with your growth this year. If I had given you this music at the beginning of the year, most of you would have panicked and had no idea how to approach it. Instead, most of you panicked and play well anyway!

Billy Hill and the Hillbillies
Update: Billy Hill & the Hillbillies are at Big Thunder Mountain Ranch for the summer. I many or may not have already gone to DL during break!
I can't believe I forgot to post this! If you haven't seen Billy Hill & the Hillbillies at Disneyland, you are bad and you should feel bad! They are at the Golden Horseshoe* most days, so what are you waiting for? Go to Disneyland!
I recorded this version of "Orange Blossom Special" a few months ago. There are better and longer videos out there if you like this. My family sees them probably 75% of the time we go and they are fantastic every time.
*The Golden Horseshoe is air conditioned AND serves ice cream sundaes. Seriously, go.

Slideshow on video page
The slideshow from our Awards Banquet is on the Videos page. Thank you to the Seitz family for doing such a wonderful job!
I fixed the videos from the Spring Concert so you can actually watch them now.
And thank you all for the scrapbook, I absolutely love it! One of my 8th graders from Twin Peaks made a scrapbook for me probably 7 years ago. I still have it and cherish it, and I will cherish this one also. All of your comments are my favorite part and you did such a great job on the pages! I'll bring it in tomorrow so you can look at it if you haven't seen it already.

Spring Concert Thoughts and Videos
Our performances (and yes, me on the exercise chair) are now up on the Video page. Mrs. Halladay did a great job recording and y'all did a great job performing! We will definitely be able to use these for our Disney Community Arts application next year.
I had a blast on Friday night and hope you all did too. Besides playing well, I think adding opening narration to Sleepy Hollow and a lightsaber battle really entertained the audience. This was one of the most fun concerts I've done as a director. I felt really confident in our preparation and it showed in our performance. JWT turned out really well! You can hear the melody well and the transitions were clean. I felt that the accents in the background part were a little dull because of the size of the performance hall, but dynamics were good throughout.
The Symphonic Orchestra pieces were pretty rough, but not so rough that the audience would notice. The parts we rehearsed on Friday morning went great, but there were awkward sections where people were lost. Still, no one panicked and everyone stayed with me and we got back on track. During the shaky sections I felt confident that an entrance was coming up that would set us right. The strings were definitely watching and following so I tried to give obvious cues. The soloists nailed their parts - Jaime on trumpet, Sarah on flute, Mia on bassoon, Christine on clarinet, and Christina (of course). I'm glad Mr. Samson and I were able to give you that experience.
I'm off to practice - practice making cookies!

I Am The Doctor
I will upload all the videos that Mrs. Halladay took last night. The videos are all HD so it's going to take a while, but here's the first one! They all sound really good! The sound in the hall for the audience was much better than what we heard on stage.
And yes, I have the video of me on the crazy chair, it'll be up soon!

Be on time and practice
Mr Samson and I have both been saying it. Here it is again in written form for you visual learners.
It is crucial that you are on time to rehearsal this week! Wednesday we start at 6:50. Friday we start at 6:50. Be in your seat, music and instrument ready, by 6:50.
I am giving you the opportunity to play John Williams Trilogy because I know you like the music and are excited to play it. Be on time so we can put it together. Practice it at home so I'm not spending rehearsal time teaching you notes, rhythms, and dynamics.
I am giving you the opportunity to perform in a full orchestra because that hasn't been done at El Dorado for several years. Be on time so we can make the most of our limited rehearsal time. Practice it at home so we can make music, not just play notes.
I am working hard to bring you these opportunities. Respect that by being on time and practicing at home. And for those of you that aren't motivated by this, I'm also going to do it this way:
On Friday, be in your seat, music and instrument ready in the bandroom, by 6:50.
IF YOU ARE LATE ON FRIDAY, YOU DON'T PLAY IN THE FULL ORCHESTRA FOR THE CONCERT THAT NIGHT.
IF YOU ONLY PLAY IN THE ORCHESTRA/SINFONIA PART OF THE CONCERT, YOU ONLY GET 1/2 CREDIT FOR YOUR GRADE FOR THE CONCERT. YOUR FINAL GRADE FOR THE YEAR WILL TAKE A BIG HIT.
Sorry it has to be this way but sometimes this is the only way to motivate you.

More SF pics! And SPAM
I posted some more pictures on the San Fran page, including some of the finest photos of me ever taken (if I say so myself).
Also, SPAM. I think Aaron Copland wrote it first.

Just keep swimming
We are getting to crunch time! With STAR testing, AP tests, prom, etc., it's getting INSANELY busy. Do you know that THIS Wednesday's rehearsal is our LAST full rehearsal before Monday's Area Night? Only Lady Rinaldo has an AP test that day. Otherwise we are losing a lot of people each day.
Everyone is doing a great job focusing so we are having productive rehearsals. But absences have been high! Attendance is still a major part of your grade and I still expect you at every rehearsal (outside of AP tests). So make sure you plan accordingly.
This Saturday, a String Quartet from the LA Philharmonic will be playing a concert in Claremont. I highly encourage you to check it out! Bring a ticket stub or program to me for extra credit!

Don't go on vacation
Thanks strings, winds, and percussion for a fun and exciting rehearsal on Friday! I'm looking forward to the next one, now that we know we can play through the piece.
So driving home on Friday I realized why the strings, and violins in particular, were having a difficult time counting rests. (Yes, these are the things I think about on my drive home. Shut up.) Strings, and violins in particular, do not count rests because strings, and violins in particular, are always playing. Wind parts in symphonic bands and wind ensembles have rests built in. It's just how composers write for winds. It's a physical necessity for wind players to get their instruments off their face. (In fact, we refer to any lengthy piece of music with little to no rest as being "on the face".) Strings don't have that limitation, and that's how composers write for strings. In orchestral literature the string parts do the heavy lifting. A trumpet part for a symphony might be 5 or 6 pages long. The first violin part for the same work will be 25-30 pages. (That's one of the reasons why you have stand partners - to turn all those pages!) And of course in string orchestra music, without the possibility of winds or percussion taking over the musical material, you will play almost constantly. Strings don't count rests well because they rarely have to! Winds do because you don't want them playing constantly. By the end of the piece the tone quality and intonation will be horrible and the wind players will be out of breath, as you have seen from me many times when I play along with you.
What does this have to do about vacation? My friend and mentor, Dan Durand, has told me many times that you can't go on vacation during rests. In other words, you're job isn't over just because you're resting. The music continues and you need to stay mentally engaged to successfully execute your next entrance. Don't space out!
Unfortunately, on Friday I missed my opportunity for my favorite way to sarcastically count rests...

Movie soundtracks
Inspired by Laura's "I am the Doctor" and Faith's digging up Game of Thrones sheet music. I'm working on both of these to at least sight-read, if not perform.
And someone remind me to try out electric violins on "I am the Doctor" please! I keep meaning to add those but keep forgetting about it. Kaila has a new ax she wants to try out!
Different people have arranged these and have graciously made sheet music for strings available. I'm re-arranging it specifically for us.
The same guy did a Game of Thrones arrangement, but I thought this was cooler/different. Talk about using full bows! That's a lot of music being made by four people.

SF day three
Sorry I missed day 2! We were in the city all day and got back late. We walked some of the Golden Gate Bridge - Maria, Kana, and I made it the furthest - halfway. It was so foggy we couldn't even see the bridge before we started walking on it! We then went to Fisherman's Wharf, ghirardelli square, and the Hard Rock to celebrate Kaila & Sarah's birthdays. I'll get pictures up on Monday but right now I'm posting from my phone.
Now for the performance results! We received the silver award, with an average score of 85.3 out of 100. Our 3 judges were Dr Kirt Saville from BYU, Dr James Arwine from Pasadena City College, and Dr Brian Sproul from the University of Utah. Dr Saville gave us a great clinic on stage after we performed, talking about matching bows and various ways to be even more expressive with our phrases. They loved the challenging nature of the pieces we performed, the musicality of our performance, and David & Miriam on Bailes - they played great today!
I did get 2 CDs at the awards ceremony tonight. I believe one is judges comments and the other is a recording of the group. We had microphones right in front of us.
Finally we received a big shiny trophy for overall orchestra award! Both the trophy and silver award plaque will be at the office front desk on Monday to check out.
And now everyone is in my room. Don't know how that happened. Popularity is my curse I guess.
Yes I rode roller coasters. The Grizzly is a wooden coaster, the Psycho Mouse is is a Goofy's Sky School type deal, and The Demon has 2 loops and a double corkscrew!
Bed check time! I'll see all y'all on Wednesday.

San Francisco day one
Our day of travel went very well! We stopped after the Grapevine (why is it called that?) to stretch and for lunch around noon. We met 2 other school groups at In N Out going the opposite direction, TO L.A. for their festival trip. We got to the hotel right before 4 pm. Unfortunately, joe/David/Thomas/Jon 's room was not ready, but they did get free wifi & breakfast for being patient during the hour wait. A lot of us took advantage of the fitness center and pool/spa. I particularly enjoyed answering Sarah/Maria/Kana/Caitlyn's rapid fire questions about anything AND everything.
IHOP seems to be the popular choice for breakfast tomorrow, then it's off to San fransisco.

Schmoozing/out of the comfort zone
So I went to the Director's Symposium put on by the San Diego Winds last night, and who is the first person I meet walking in? Warren Torns, of course, who is one of our judges on Tuesday. I made sure to introduce myself and then he introduces himself. Yes, I know who you are, you're kind of a big deal.
Anyway, I told him I live in Penasquitos, where he taught for many years, and that he'll be one of my judges next week. Listening to him and Tom Cole (a judge on Wednesday), it is apparent that they expect notes, rhythms, dynamics, intonation, etc., to all be at a high level. But what they really want is to hear music. They want to be entertained and moved just like everyone else in the audience, maybe even more so since they have to listen to every group that day. Mr. Watson liked a lot of what we did at pre-festival, but he was genuinely excited by "Air". That how we want our judges to feel after we perform.
The person who most impressed me though, is Anthony Maiello. He's directing us tonight as the various band directors play in a group together. But he deserves his own post.
Meanwhile, because so many band directors tend to be trumpet players, I volunteered to play trombone if necessary. I played trombone in a community band over the summer. Turns out this is completely different. The other guys showed up with bass trombones, which means I ended up on first. And we sight read 10+ tunes. No prep, no explanation, no second chances (except for Mr. Maiello). I was just a bit out of my comfort zone. Luckily not only do I enjoy the challenge, but everyone else was chowing just as much as me, but on their primary instruments, so that's good(?). Tonight we are only playing 2 tunes, and this is one of them:
But hey, we played this one TWO WHOLE TIMES last night, so piece of cake! And I got to practice the music today. I'm looking forward to the concert tonight!

EDHS 8th grade night
Thank you to Kathleen, Kaila, Jose, Andrew, Rinaldo, Hyeji, Axel, Caitlyn, Hyejin and Faith for performing at 8th grade night! I know it was nerve-wracking to play in front of a packed gym but it was much appreciated by the audience. And you will appreciate it if/when we get a big freshman class next year!
8th graders and parents, it was very nice to meet all of you, or see you again if we've met at Tuffree. Please feel free to contact me with any questions - mnowak@pylusd.org.

Schubert Symphony No. 8
This is the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Ricardo Muti. Yes, I know it says Symphony 7 on the title card. It's pretty common for the numbering of symphonies to be mixed up - Dvorak's Symphonies are the same way. Yes, I know it says "Wiener Philharmoniker", hee hee. That's the possessive German for Vienna.
I thought it might be useful for you to see and hear a professional performance - and please understand that this is one of, if not the, most renowned orchestras in the world. Our version is obviously much shorter but contains all the main themes (melodies) of the first movement.

Drifen
Check out this recording of Drifen by the Austin Youth Orchestra Philharmonic. There are a lot of good things in this performance, but some things could be improved. As you listen, ask yourself:
Do I hear a big difference in dynamics?
Does each section sound strong and together?
How is the intonation - especially in the first violin part?
At measure 23, are they playing like everyone has the melody?
Does the tempo stay consistent throughout?
Now compare it with this one from South Carolina:

Listening assignment review tomorrow
You will NOT need your instruments for tomorrow's class, Wednesday 1/8. We will be broadening our musical horizons in a different way by having a class discussion of our listening assignment. I have read all the ones I have received and you have a lot of great ideas!
Also great job in today's rehearsal all Orchestra members. We learned a really tough part of Drifen* and it got noticeably better every time we went over it.
*Please read in German accent - Dry-ven!
